I'm officialy into my Christmas holidays at last! I still have some work to do but it's not much at all. I can't wait untill my girlfriend comes back home so I can be with her again, it's going to be amazing!

Anyway, here's some photography - Snow pictures

That's right, after many weeks of working on this on and off the Spaceman animation is finally complete! Here it is:

Spaceman from Bryn Richards on Vimeo.

Now to write the report.

Almost there!

I'm almost there! The animation is almost ready to be rendered and forgotten about forever. I spent today animating the weight frame by frame...525 frames! I also built the set and textured everything! All I have left to do now is to animate the camera a little bit on impact of the character falling over.

Here's how everything is looking so far:

I worked out that the 21 seconds of animation should take just under 9 hours to render (with mental ray). So that's going to be left on tonight...hopefully I'll be able to sleep for 9 hours! :P

P.S. Here are the posters just for fun:

The last one is just a chart that I found on google images.

It's getting there.

The short Spaceman animation is getting there. There's little left to do apart from cleaning up the animation a bit, problem solving, modelling a proper set, adding some spiffy lights and then finally rendering it.

Here's what I have so far:

Now it's time to get a good nights sleep for once!

Rough Animation

Here's the animation so far, a quick playblast for you. Still rough and such!

Hopefully if all goes well tomorrow I can finish the animation completely (with minor tweaks left), model the set and do the lighting.

Blocked animation

Today I blocked out some of my animation, here's what it currently looks like:

Hopefully it should be finished quite soon, 20 seconds isn't really all that much even though 500 frames does sound quite daunting. GO GO GO ANIMATION!

You read it here first...well, not really because I posted on dA before blogger but ANYWAYS!

My Spaceman model is indeed complete, fully modelled, rigged and textured! LOOKS AT IT! LOOK:

The model and rig are nothing special at all but for me this is a MILESTONE! So tomorrow I'm moving on to storyboards, animation and maybe some set modelling depending on what I decide to have him do.

Time to run away to do some website designing! TOODLEPIP!

Spaceman Update

I thought I'd take a break so here I be, updating my blog thing. I've been working on my Spaceman model all day. I've finished modelling him (completely now, I hope). I totally remodelled his helmet and added a head with face mask and eyes inside.

Here's how he looks so far:

I'm rigging him at the moment, which is lots of fun. He's about half done, then I have to paint the weights on him but it shouldn't take all that long to complete all of that. If I work hard I'll get a lot done tonight.

Just to share my pain, here's what rigging a character looks like in Maya:

And that's using a really low poly model. Oh's not that bad really. :P Now it's time to feast then get back to work! FARE WELLS!

Just a quick update so that I don't get into the habbit of not posting anything on here, like I did for months.

I'm busy busy busy trying to get all of my work done before Christmas.

The Spaceman is getting rigged and animated. I'm working on a stylized render of the National Media Museum, creating an animation completely from MEL script (Oh God) and messing about with a live action film that I directed for a module.

So far things are looking good for all this work and it looks like I'll be able to get them all done quite soon actually. So that makes me happy because it means I can run off to be with my beautiful girlfriend sooner! :D Then CHRISTMAS!!!!

I'm running away now, must works MORE!

I thought I'd add a pointless entry just for the sake of it.

At this very moment I haven't slept in exactly 30 hours and 40 minutes.

This morning I was showering at 7:30 and was around and about directing a short film for uni at 8am untill around 12pm. After being awake for 15 hours this was quite painful and confusing to do but we all pulled through and got there in the end.

Sadly this meant that I was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too tired to even think about trying to do anything animation-wise. I did try but I kept falling asleep at the computer, so that didn't work out too well.

Over the weekend I'm going to be having waaaaaaaaaaay too much fun with my girlfriend back in Wales to think about uni stuff but I'll probably try to sort out some rough storyboards out at some point. Or at least some brain storms.

Now I'm off to relax a bit more, try to stay awake for an hour or two longer and then finally collapse and pass out in bed.

Oooh, but before I go, here's something to look at. This is a quick animation I made the other day using a rig I found:

I was just messing about with the rig and felt like doing a quick little animation. It's nothing special at all.

On that note, here's some of my other videos:

Forget the last post!!!

Ok. Take NO notice of the post before this. I was muchly confused but now I'm not and it's all very good and happy.

So, basically I went away and thought "A blob character? After all that learning and modelling...HELLS NO!" So I stuck in there, (kind of) finished it and now all that's left is to rig and animate it.

Here he is, the (very close to being) finished Spaceman:

The pack and the pipe might still get added depending on what I'm going to animate him doing. Tis all going well so far, let's hope it stays this way! :P

Expect the animation to be online before, on or around the 11th of December!

Things a changin'

I'm probably going to completely change my model and animation idea. So that means no more Spaceman, sadly. Maybe one day though, who be knowing? That could be my final major project unless a better idea comes along.

Basically the model I was working on was going to be far too complicated and the animation was too. I was going a bit too overboard with my ideas for what the marking scheme actually was. It's probably going to end up being quite a generic looking blob like guy like this:

Only the above model was based on a picture given to me so my model will look quite a bit different but will still be "blob" like.

I haven't thought about what he'll be doing yet so I'll have to get thinking soon. I'm already modelling the guy so things should start happening soon!

Spaceman Model Progress

As I mentioned in my last post I'll be updating on the "Spaceman" project. Here's the latest update. The 3D model so far, it's a long way from completion but it's a start. Everything's going well so far but I know that the helmet is going to be a bitch with the transparent visor and the face underneath.

(Click, click, click!!!)

Reworked storyboards should also be coming soon. I drew thumbnail sized storyboards on the train back from visiting my lady, so they need to be redrawn traditionaly or digitaly so that I can hand them in as part of the project.

Sleep time, farewells!

Work work work

Righto, so I'm doing muchly uni work at the moment. I have four modules worth of work to get finished by Christmas so that I can spend the holiday with my beautiful girlfriend and not have to worry about getting anything done.

I'm working on:

  • A character model and animation (I'll post information about this soon, look at the last post, the animation is going to be based around that spaceman character).
  • Dubbing animation - I've actually finished this, all I have to do is the write up. Easy, check it out if you want to -
  • A three minute drama - this is group work and it should turn out to be pretty cool. I'm directing it.
  • The last is another group project, we have to render a scene in Maya. I'm in charge of lighting and rendering the night scene.

So yeah, all that to do before the 12th of December. The model's on its way, dubbing done, the drama is all scheduled to be shot and edited so that's easy and the render will get worked on after the spaceman model is finished.

Roll on beautiful Christmas! :D

Some Arts

An update of some art that's forced its way out of me over the past months.

Latest Picture

Ooh some original characters...apparently! :O :P

This started out as a messy sketch ( [link] ) with no direction and somehow turned into this. I'm quite proud of it apart from the horrible shading.

Twas done over a few lazy hours in Photoshop.

Wow...I haven't updated this since January so I guess now's a better time than ever!

Basically I've finished my first year at uni, did well in my exams and can go onto doing honours now too. So everything to do with uni is great!

I've been playing around with digital art a lot more too and I think I'm (hopefully) getting somewhere with it. I'd link all my pictures here but I'm too lazy at the moment so if anyone actually reads this then just go to and check out my stuff.

I'll hopefully start updating this a lot more once I get back to uni.

Monday, 28 January 2008

I've been so busy with uni, my radio shows and other such things that I have left it over a week to post on here. That's not too good for my new years resolutions.

Anyways I've been up to many a thing! Some being:

  • Digital arting
  • Drawings (traditional)
  • Making fun things in Maya (check my deviantart page)
  • Learning more Maya
  • Watching great films
  • And of course attending all my lectures and getting everything uni-wise sorted
All very fun! I wont spam this page with images so if anyone actually reads this just go to for my latest stuff.

Oh yeah, I got two A's for two pieces of work from last semester. Happy days! :D Also I'm still recovering from a sprained ankle. Wayhay!

WACOM and exams

WAYHAY! I got my wacom in the post the other morn' but sadly I've only had enough time to do one thing one it and that's this image to the left. After my exam on Tuesday I'll be getting right back in there to do as much as I can with it! What a torture it is to have a new toy and not have the ability to play with it!

A new year

Firstly, two new images!

This is a sketch of a lovely lady who can be found here - 'lockstock

And this silly looking thing was the child of Boredom and Software. Started as a sketch in Flash then I threw it into PS and coloured it etc. Nothing special at all.

I'm back in Bradford now which means I can do a lot more than I could whilst in Wales over Christmas. So be expecting more from me, I am. Recently I ordered something beautiful, with any luck it'll be here by Friday and I can start on a few projects and deserved images. I really doubt anyone reads this so I'm going to just spam random stuff out for the sake of documenting it. And now I've said that I have gone completely blank and can't think what I wanted to say in the first place. Anyway, I'm going to keep practicing drawing and all that. I'm also hoping to start creating group projects outside of university between a few of my friends. I have quite a few things in mind so it should be loads of fun!

That's enough from me for now I think. Take care!
